The Trois-Rivières Lions (the ECHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens) are proud to announce that they will honour the career of former coach and Quebec hockey legend Michel Bergeron during a special-themed game on Saturday, February 6, 2027, at 3 p.m. at the Colisée Vidéotron.
Known as the “Tiger,” Michel Bergeron began his coaching career in Trois-Rivières, behind the bench of the Draveurs, from 1974-75 to 1979-80. Over six seasons, he coached the Trois-Rivières club and helped write some of the most memorable chapters in its history.
The 1978-79 season remains particularly memorable. In 72 regular-season games, the Draveurs posted an impressive record of 58 wins, eight losses and six ties for a total of 122 points. In the playoffs, the Trois-Rivières team suffered just one loss before ultimately capturing the championship.
Under Bergeron’s leadership, the Draveurs won two President’s Cups and finished first in the regular-season standings twice.
Following his successful tenure in Trois-Rivières, Michel Bergeron made the jump to the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Quebec Nordiques, whom he coached for seven seasons. In 554 games behind the Nordiques’ bench, he posted a record of 253 wins, 222 losses and 79 ties.
It was also under Bergeron’s leadership that the Nordiques made their deepest playoff run of that era, in 1981-82. Quebec eliminated the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins before falling to the New York Islanders.
Bergeron also coached the New York Rangers for two seasons before returning to the Nordiques for one final season.
A true icon of Quebec hockey, Michel Bergeron also enjoyed a long career in the media as a hockey analyst, notably during Montreal Canadiens games. He also covered the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
Now 80 years old, Michel Bergeron announced his retirement from professional activities last spring.
The Trois-Rivières Lions are proud to recognize Michel Bergeron’s outstanding contribution to Quebec hockey and, in particular, the lasting mark he left on the history of hockey in Trois-Rivières.
