The Trois-Rivières Lions (affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens) capped off the game in style, earning their fourth consecutive win with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Norfolk Admirals.
The Lions opened the scoring midway through the first period. After receiving a pass from Jacob Dion, Brooklyn Kalmikov fired a quick shot past the opposing goaltender to record his second goal of the season.
With less than a minute remaining in the opening frame, Admirals captain Brandon Osmundson tied the game for the Virginia-based team.
In the second period, Kalmikov struck again to put the Lions back in front. On the power play, the newcomer unleashed a powerful shot to beat the Norfolk goaltender for the second time. Jacob Dion recorded his second assist of the game, while Isaac Dufort also picked up a point on the play.
A few minutes later, the Admirals once again evened the score, as defenceman Brenhdan Engum netted his first goal of the season.
In the third period, the Lions regained the lead for the third time in the game. Nathaël Roy found the back of the net on a cross-ice pass from Mathias Laferrière, while Mathieu Bizier also earned an assist on the play.
However, a late goal by Kristof Papp allowed the Admirals to tie the game and force overtime.
After an extra period highlighted by a strong defensive effort from the Lions, a shootout was needed to determine the winner.
In the third round of the shootout, Lions captain Anthony Beauregard played the hero, sending the puck into the back of the net to secure the victory for Trois-Rivières.
In goal, Francesco Lapenna kept the Lions in the game, stopping 26 of the 29 shots he faced. The Laval native also made six saves in overtime and three more during the shootout. Still undefeated in regulation in the ECHL this season, Lapenna earned second-star honours.
The two teams will meet for one final time this Sunday at 3:05 p.m. The Lions will then return home to the Colisée Vidéotron on Friday, October 30, at 7 p.m. for Rock Night.
